Happy New Year and welcome back to MED Magazine, the monthly webzine of the Macmillan English Dictionaries resource site!

We start the new year in our regular column about new words with an overview of abbreviations and acronyms frequently used in English Language Teaching or ELT.

In the feature article Richard Cauldwell, author of the award-winning electronic publication Streaming Speech, takes a closer look at the meanings of the function word like, using recordings of spontaneous speech.

The Business English series continues with teaching tips for negotiations skills. You'll also find here some useful activities and teacher's notes for practising vocabulary for effective negotiations.

The Study Skills article this month offers a guide and helpful tools for improving composition skills, and also includes a description of different types of composition.

If you would like to browse the back issues of MED Magazine to read more about a particular topic, you'll find the Index helpful. On this page you can view the covers of all our back issues.

If you'd like to send us your suggestions or comments, please fill in and email this form to us. One this page you can read a selection of birthday greetings, and here you can find out what other readers have said about this webzine.

On behalf of the MED Magazine team I wish you happy browsing for 2005.
